FILE 91 // DENT MAY

Dent May’s music takes you always to a blissful and warmer place. Following his heart and his old friends, the Mississippi-raised singer songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalists relocated to sunny Los Angeles 2 years ago. Dent’s latest LP “Across The Multiverse” is filled with dreamy psychedelic pop which takes you on a cosmic trip back to a breezy summer day in the 70s. The lyrics are smart and humorous just like him off-stage, his music videos, his short biography (“hotel bar lounge singer, daytime tv talk show host, tarot reader to the stars”) and his essentials. His backpack is packed with “on the road must-haves” he has refined over the years touring around the world. The selection seems to describe him well: a creative professional with creature comforts we all are too familiar with: a healthy addiction to Chapsticks lip balm or Ricola cough drops. 1. NOTEBOOK (NO BRAND): I used to buy fancy leather notebooks, but I was too afraid to write in them because they were so pretty. Now I buy the cheapest I can find. I use them to jot down songwriting …

FILE 90 // PAN DAIJING

Pan Daijing. It’s not only the artist’s name but also stands for a singular art form because there is no genre or label that can sum up her work. Pan’s live performances take place at galleries, museums, theaters and underground venues – the space becomes a part of the experience for her and the audience to connect. Her album Lack 惊蛰 on Berlin-based label PAN is merely a teaser into her world of extremes creating an appetite for more. Pan’s work can be violent, dissonant and dark but with delicate elements, moments of relief and silence. The high contrast of her work, however, feel almost meditative and allow the artist and the audience to become more intimate. It’s a smart technique Pan has full control over because she directs and builds her shows to every detail ranging from lighting, costumes and visuals. Born and raised in China, Pan moved to Berlin 2 years ago after receiving a sound design degree in San Francisco and starting her musical career back in China’s art and performance scene. We were able to catch her in between international tours and a trip back …

FILE 87 // FRANCOIS X

Parisian producer and DJ Francois X is one of the reasons why the French capital is having an electronic music revival. Since 2011 Dement3d, a party series he and HBT worked on together, helped defining the Techno scene by inviting guests such as Sandwell District, Planetary Assault System, Marcel Dettman, Mortiz Von Oswald and Silent Servant. With a growing following as well as a big push by friend and mentor DJ DEEP, who is known for his Deeply Rooted parties and imprint, he got into the art of producing and releasing his own music. This all sounds very organic and like an easy dream come true but Francois X had several careers before he reached this point. When he told us that he had worked as a day trader, owned a fashion label and played tennis on a professional level, we could understand why he was so humble and down-to-earth despite the big success. Calling himself a “Ninja”, he was very aware of his musical passion now turned into a full-time career as well as the industry and its evolution. Maybe his musical understanding and sensibility helped him and HBT …

FILE 84 // PEREL

Berlin-based producer, DJ and singer Annegret Fiedler aka Perel has made some smart decisions in her career. From the selection of labels she chose to work with to the impressive list of exclusive mixes and artist collaborations, she has slowly paved the way to make her dream come true: an album release on the famous label DFA Records — the “dance floor institution” founded by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. The success story did not happen overnight. Musical breakthroughs are like lotteries and patience as well as endurance is required to eventually hit the jackpot, or not. Speaking to Annegret, we noticed how much she cared about her supporting fans and the strong network behind the brand Perel. She brings the perfect balance of fun and professionalism and her essentials show the same. The carefully curated collection of items are iconic yet practical and necessary for her to keep the show going. 1. PERFUME (CHANEL, CHECK HERE): Real disco sweat needs a proper answer. 2. GLASSES (VINTAGE, NO BRAND): This lady is about about 30 years handmade in Italy. 3. CONCEALER (BENEFIT, CHECK HERE): Dark eye circles are essential part of …

1. TRAVEL BAG (NO BRAND): Goodie bag filled with lotions, pills, toothpastes , dont leave home without it!  2. TABLE TENNIS RACKET (BUTTERFLY, CHECK HERE): Table tennis racket, i used to be a semi pro, still looking for partners wherever i go, are you one? 3. FILE 56 // THROWING SHADE

1. HAND MOISTURIZER (PALMER’S, CHECK HERE ): I always have to stay moisturised and so I always make sure to carry hand lotion and lip balm with me. I really hate the feeling of having dry hands. It’s something that me and my best friend Emily have in common, and we’re both obsessed with hand lotion. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter is really good at keeping your skin hydrated and it smells amazing too – I never go for the “fragrance free” version!  2. PHONE + PHONE CASE (TOTORO, READ HERE): I got this Totoro phone case during my trip to Australia earlier this year. I’d wanted it for ages and then I spotted it in a phone case shop in the Chinatown area of Sydney. The case triples the size of my phone and I can’t really fit it into my pockets anymore but the cuteness is worth it 🙂 Also, it’s turning out to be a good conversation starter cause people are always a bit “WTF?!” when I pull my phone out. 3. WALLET (COMME DES GARCONS, CHECK HERE): This is my favourite wallet …

FILE 51 // MIKE SERVITO

1. TRAVEL (RIMOWA – SALSA CABIN TROLLEY, CHECK HERE): I recently downsized the amount of records I was traveling with and was also looking for a carry on that wasn’t going to give me any problems with size and overhead space. So far, so good! The matte black looked the best to me, fits my record bag, and has room for extras. It’s slowly gaining character with nicks and scratches here and there, but it won’t dent like the Aluminium ones. 2. POTION (AESOP – FACIAL HYDRATING CREAM & BODY BALM, CHECK HERE): I actually feel incomplete for the day without these 2 things. I use both daily + a few other Aesop products. I didn’t wanna get carried away here. I absolutely can’t live without the stuff! And while it seems like a bit of an investment, your skin will thank you for it. Also, it smells really nice. 3. UNIFORM (BLACK 2 BUTTON POLO, VARIOUS BRANDS): Not to be cliche, but one less thing to think about when on the go is totally fine with me. Simplicity is necessary sometimes. I opted for every black 2 button polo this past spring, snagging them …

FILE 48 // HONEY DIJON

1. CONDOMS (SKYN, CHECK HERE ): One must always be prepared for those special intimate moments and me being an aesthete I loved the simplicity of the packaging, the color gradation, and the font. They also feel like there is nothing there between you and your loved one ( or the one your loving at the moment !) 2. PERFUME (BYREDO, BUY HERE ): Scent to me is the essence of style. Also nice shoes, hair, teeth, and skin. Im obsessed with Byredo because they are so unique and I love the founder’s Ben Gorham’s world. So chic. I have about 4 now, 2 for spring/summer and two for fall/winter. This is my current favorite. 3. COCONUT OIL (SHEA MOISTURE, CHECK HERE ): Coconut oil is nectar from the gods. You can cook with with it, use it on your body, your hair, sex lubricant ( not with condomns, but with yourself is lovely also ) and it smells good too!  My favorite thing next to my Vitamix. FILE 47 // TRUS’ME

1. HEADPHONES (BOSE, CHECK HERE ): For years friends have been telling me about the advantages of isolating earphones on long haul travel. I was never keen due to the idea of carrying a 2nd pair of headphones along with my DJ headphones. Then these in ear isolated headphones came out by Bose, and I was sold. You can still rest your head and sleep, while blocking the outside world out. As a dj that little ear rest before and after the show, makes the world of difference. 2. PRODUCTION SECRET (UNIVERSAL AUDIO, CHECK HERE ): Universal Audio has always been an integral part of my music production, but with the ‘Satellite’ I could take all that power on the road. I can set up anywhere, any city and essential have 100% what I need to finish a mix down. So longer holidays in the sun, where is the negative in that? 3. SKIN CARE (KIEHL’S, CHECK HERE ): The body clock is clicking and it’s time to think of the skin.  What ever is in this wonder cream defines laws,  it pops your skin back to that fresh …
