FILE 102 // SPENCER PARKER

5elect5 Essentials Spencer Parker Hands

2018 was another busy year for London-born producer and DJ Spencer Parker. He is ending this year on a high note with the release of his second album “Dance Music” on Work Them Records. Founded back in 2012, the label has become the one stop shop for high energy house, techno and disco tracks – all you need in your record bag for a fueled dance floor. Supporting new talents such as P.Leone & Valya Kan as well as friends like DJ Deep, Rødhäd, ItaloJohnson and long-time partner in all crimes Radio Slave – whose label Rekids he very much considers home away from home – shows his wide network and talent for bringing people together to collaborate.

For the photoshoot, we met Parker at his apartment in Berlin. Whenever we meet an artist at his / her home, we come to realize that a selection of essentials is merely a snapshot of the creative individual and not enough to paint the full picture. Parker’s home was filled with colors and fun rare items – mostly “best worst” souvenirs from every city he visits (which is well documented via his Instagram) and treasures which reveal his keen interest in fashion, photography and, needless to say, records!

MY ESSENTIALS

5elect5 Essentials Spencer Parker

1. SNEAKERS (COMME DES GARCONS X NIKE ACG, CHECK HERE): As you can see from this little 5election, I am very much of the opinion that, if it’s worth getting one – why not get two …?!? I was after this shoe from the second I saw an image of it from the Commes des Garçons mens show in Paris earlier in the year- and waited patiently until they finally popped out a couple months ago. They are both made of suede, so, hardly the most “disco friendly” sneaker in the world but – I just loved them so much that I didn’t care- carpe the fucking diem !!! (in black aaaaaaand white – and in a 42.5 please…)

I’m a fan of the Nike ACG stuff and these are every bit as comfortable as I thought they’d be – so my investment has definitely paid off as I’ll be wearing these for a while yet. At the moment both pairs are fairly pristine and, although I know they are gonna be appearing a little beaten up in the coming months, I’m sure they’ll look even better, once they have weathered a few of life’s inevitable storms -much like myself… 😉

2. PASSPORTS AND PASSPORT HOLDER (SMYTHSON , CHECK HERE): The passport holder was a lovely birthday gift from some lovely friends a good many years ago, and not only have I managed to hold on to it, I’ve also managed to keep what goes in it – my passport !

A friend of mine that was in a heavily touring band told me about the sneaky (but perfectly legal) trick where you can, with a little paperwork, apply to have not one, but two UK passports in your own name. This is meant for business people, musicians, athletes, or anyone that travels so much for their job that its quite possible they need one document to travel with, while the other is away, sitting in an embassy somewhere, being fitted with a visa for a country that necessitates one (such as America, China, Russia, etc). I’ve been to Russia 13 times so far, China a couple times and many trips to the US, so, having a couple of passports has been extremely useful.

3. COMME DES GARCONS AND MOCA STORE BAG (CHECK HERE & HERE ): I loooooooooove a good, correct size, well made, great looking, up to the task, tough as nails carry on bag, and these bags both be that ! The CDG one was a gift from my beloved mother bought as we perused Dover Street Market one afternoon (yes- my mum is just THAT cool) and means all the more because it came from and reminds me of her (shout out to Mama Parker). It’s actually a paper bag encased in plastic and through a bit of abuse and trying to fit too many records/duty free champagne bottles/cheese and wine from any Italian airport you care to name, the paper has ripped and handle broken slightly. But I love these perfect imperfections and it’s one of my most favourite / useful bags to travel with.

The MOCA bag I managed to shrink in the wash like a fucking idiot but is still a great bag and reminds me of the day I took myself off to see the amazing “Axis Mundo : Queer Networks in Chicano LA” exhibition at the MOCA in Los Angeles, last year. The exhibition, I absolutely loved and I learnt so much about Mundo Meza and his work by attending and seeing the pictures, outfits and video that was on display. But, what really touched me was a talk that the legendary Simon Doonan gave in another part of the museum (to only about 50 people) about his time in Los Angeles in the 80’s and of working with Mundo Meza. Several people in attendance knew both Simon and Mundo personally and to hear some of them speak about that time in their lives, and of people that are no longer with us, was really something quite touching.

4. FANTASTIC MAN / THE GENTLEWOMAN (CHECK HERE & HERE): I am a huge fan of actual, real life printed magazines and whilst I buy many,  these are undoubtedly my two favourites. As you would assume, Fantastic Man is aimed at men with The Gentlewoman being its companion title aimed at women, but I buy and read both as they are just that good. Each magazine looks amazing and, more than anything, I love the tone of them both. They are both serious about the subjects they cover but also extremely fun in their approach.

I have read so many articles in both titles that have then lead me on to to read further books, magazines or pieces on various subjects or people, or had me reaching for my Spotify playlist to listen to a new artist i was hitherto completely unaware of. In a world where so much media, both printed and online, is such utter, utter bullshit, these two magazines shine brightly as the complete opposite and I can’t wait for each new issue when they drop, twice yearly.

5. BIG SNOOPY / LITTLE SNOOPY (KAWS X UNIQLO, CHECK HERE): It’s a big plush toy Snoopy. And a little plush toy Snoopy.

5elect5 Essentials Iarahei Hands

Chilean musician, producer and DJ Iara Espinoza Dos Santos AKA IARAHEI is a bundle of energy and talent. Aside from the selection of essentials below, her studies in tarot and astrology are the other source of inspiration for her music. The musical influences by artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Daft Punk and M.I.A shape the sound of IARAHEI. Listen to her latest work as a member of the synth-pop band Sri Lanka 100.

MY ESSENTIALS

5elect5 Essentials Iarahei

1. COMPUTER (APPLE, CHECK HERE): My computer is EVERYTHING for what I do. It the tool that gets me making new music, listening and discovering music, and express my feelings and desires. It also knows when i’m sad and cheers me up. It’s a wonderful partner that comes in almost every musical activity that i do, but sometimes I try to make sure it gets some rest… I love you, sweetie!

2. LITTLE POCKET ESSENTIALS (A COLLECTION): For this journey in the academy, I tried to used this little bag somebody gave me to carry around some tiny essencials: My stones for energetic help/healing, my usb sticks for some little CDJ magic, a lip balm to take care of my lips and a misterious potion that you’ll have to figure out what it is for…

3. DRUM MACHINE (TEENAGE ENGINEERING, CHECK HERE): Last year was a turning point for getting to know some analog (portable) equipment. This PO-12 I bought from a friend is a very powerful tool that creates tons of charming and wonderful sounds with just a couple of clicks. The resolution of its sound is amazing and sometimes I plug it in with my Volca Keys for some fun glitchy-hoppy jams.

4. SOUNDCARD (FOCUSRITE, CHECK HERE): If my computer was the milk for my music, the soundcard is definetely the Oreo (cookies). I also take the soundcard literally everywhere with me, and it’s the one that can make me do a song in just five minutes, record some random vocals and get together musical ideas that can leave in just a glimpse.

5. HEADPHONES (AIAIAI, CHECK HERE): It may sound stupid, but when I say I cant live without music, it’s because literally I cant even FUNCTION without listening to it. I need at least an hour of music in the morning so I can properly start the day. I take my headphones everywhere too (if I dont, I feel incomplete) and these ones are very good to capture more sophisticated details after some proper personalized EQ of my own choice…

FILE 97 // ANASTASIA KRISTENSEN

Hands Anastasia Kristensen 5elect5 Essentials

Born in Russia and now based in Copenhagen, Anastasia Kristensen is one of the strongest names that represent Denmark’s electronic music scene today. Her artistic career started early in classical music which can be still found in her wide musical spectrum of DJ sets. Building her local profile in the Danish capital blossomed recently into a residency at the legendary dance music club Culture Box and bookings at FabricBerlin Atonal, Unsound Festival, and Boiler Room at Present Perfect Festival this year. Despite the impressive touring schedule around the world, Kristensen keeps a full-time job as an IT consultant which she really enjoys and values. She says that her day job which has nothing to do with music keeps her sane and allows her to focus even more on music because her time is limited.

Kistensens’s DJ sets span a wide spectrum of genres and styles. She takes pride in finding unique gems and unreleased music which has made her also one of Denmark’s musical tastemakers. It’s no surprise that her talent is widely supported in the community which results in strong collaborations such as the one on Special Request’s EP “Through The Looking Glass” with Nina Kraviz on Houndstooth. Her essentials are as tasteful as her track selections: a mix of classics and unexpected but fun items such as the fidget spinner and cat-eye glasses.

Essentials Anastasia Kristensen 5elect5

1. PASSPORT (DANISH):  Passport is for me to explore the world. It’s always with me because you never know where and what’s next, right? 😉

2. SUN GLASSES (NO BRAND): It’s my new permanent item, both for the looks and for the warm crazy sun this summer

3. LIP BALM (KIEHL’S, CHECK HERE): Kiehl’s just happen to have the best Lip Balm, I don’t think I’ve known of any more compact one than this.

4. FIDGET SPINNER (NO BRAND): It’s a millennial device, but I dig it so much. Perfect for deep thoughts and when a decision needs to be made 😀

5. NAIL OIL (NO BRAND): This is nail oil – Keepin’ them nails nourished

6. EAR PLUGS (AUDIOVOX, CHECK HERE): Probably the most essential tool for any musician. Also very useful, when I want to nap and there’s a baby crying on the flight

FILE 90 // PAN DAIJING

Hands Pandaijing 5elect5 EssentialsPan Daijing. It’s not only the artist’s name but also stands for a singular art form because there is no genre or label that can sum up her work. Pan’s live performances take place at galleries, museums, theaters and underground venues – the space becomes a part of the experience for her and the audience to connect. Her album Lack 惊蛰 on Berlin-based label PAN is merely a teaser into her world of extremes creating an appetite for more. Pan’s work can be violent, dissonant and dark but with delicate elements, moments of relief and silence. The high contrast of her work, however, feel almost meditative and allow the artist and the audience to become more intimate. It’s a smart technique Pan has full control over because she directs and builds her shows to every detail ranging from lighting, costumes and visuals.

Born and raised in China, Pan moved to Berlin 2 years ago after receiving a sound design degree in San Francisco and starting her musical career back in China’s art and performance scene. We were able to catch her in between international tours and a trip back home to China. Dressed in black leather from head to toe, she shared with us that wearing leather gives her comfort and has become the outfit of choice on stage. Spending time with her family and eating home-cooked meals are equally essential to her creative process as the selection of items shown below. Although her work is so international, avant-garde and borderless – her roots and inspiration are in China and will always stay in China.

Essentials Pan Daijing 5elect5

1. CALENDAR (FIND IN CHINA): Chinese year calendar with photos of ancient antiques. Good remind of the day.

2. CANDY (FIND IN CHINA): Sugar free throat candy made with classic throat healing recipe in china.

3. OIL (WING LONG, FIND IN CHINA): Red flower oil helps with muscle pain and wounds. Must have for frequent travellers and heavy sports life. Intense smell also refresh the brain.

4. VIBRATOR (FIND YOUR OWN): Vibrates away all the stress. Quick pleasure.

5. SYNTHESIZER (ATOMO SYNTH, CHECK HERE): Favorite piece of gear of all time.

FILE 82 // BARBARA KLEIN

Hands Barbara Klein 5elect5 EssentialsBarbara Klein is a Berlin-based Polish musician, videographer and photographer. She established her career and reputation working with Techno legend Richie Hawtin and captured his his global tours in the form of tour diaries, event recaps and conceptual films. Other work includes collaboration with Soundwalk Collective (who we also covered on 5elect5), Yamaha Spotify and now Native Instruments, one of the industry leading companies in music technology. For the early morning photoshoot, we met Barbara at her cozy apartment in the heart of Kreuzberg. Unlike her body of work that tends to speak a dark and mysterious language, she was warm and kind, offering us a cup of coffee and slices of fresh watermelon. Her essentials are a selection of items that give insight into her background, family as well as herself – revealing a strong connection to her passion turned into a profession . When she asked whether cigarettes or colourful cute socks with animals were better for the shoot, we obviously went for the socks. She then pulled out her large collection of socks for us to choose from which made us think that we had learned another side of Barbara who usually is dressed in all black outfits.

Essentials Barbara Klein 5elect5

1. VINTAGE CAMERA (PRAKTICA, CHECK HERE): Leaving home without a camera gives me an anxiety attack. Lately it’s mostly analog one outside of work situation, because I love the ritual of watching family albums together.

2. COFFEE (NO BRAND, JUST COFFEE): Coffee and liquids in general. In higher than average amounts.

3. TOY CAMERA (KIKKERLAND, BUY HERE): Got this little beauty right after moving to Berlin from a friend, who convinced me I have enough talent and power to make a living out of my photography, which at time time was just a hobby. Today it’s a reminder to have fun while working hard.

4. SOCKS (TUTUANNA, ALWAYS BUY HERE): My outfit is all black most of the time, except of the socks. This obsession started on a trip to Japan, from where I brought 30 pairs back home. Funky socks seem to uplift not only me, they always bring smile to people who notice them. I think life is too short for black socks.

FILE 77 // ALINKA

Hands Alinka 5elect5 Chicago native Alinka started off her career playing alongside Justin Long at the city’s infamous Smartbar. Picking her battles wisely, releasing on Crosstown Rebels and Classic Records, she then teamed up with DJ and vocalist Shaun J Wright (previously part of Hercules & Love Affair) to start Twirl, a monthly party in Chicago. Their focus always stayed on the music and artists that inspire them, so it was inevitable that they expanded the Twirl empire with its own imprint: Twirl Recordings, a platform to support and manifest the music she loves. Living and working between Chicago, Berlin and New York, Shaun and Alinka just finished their latest collaborative EP “Time for Action” which was picked up by Heidi on her Jackathon Jams imprint last month.

We met Alinka at her new flat / studio in Berlin and go a warm welcome by her flatmate – a black cat named “Acid”. The reason why Alinka had chosen a flat with a garden, which is a rare find on the Berlin housing market, was that “Acid” could go outside and play. She also shared the story of cat “Acid” breaking her favorite toy bear by the artist “Acid” with the biggest smile and laugh. As it turns out, Alinka is not only a music lover but also a big cat lover – especially “Acid”. Each of Alinka’s essentials came with a unique story, a collection describing her past, present and future desires. The high quality of Twirl’s merchandising is proof of her professionalism and passion behind the project.

Essentials Alinka 5elect5

1. JACKET (TWIRL ORIGINAL, CREATE YOUR OWN HERE): I got this custom-made varsity coat as a parting gift for myself before leaving Chicago and it’s still the only one in existence. It’s by far my favorite clothing item I own, and luckily Berlin is cold enough for me to wear this a lot of the year.

2. TOYS (BEAR QUEE, CHECK HERE): I’ve been collecting designer toys for years! They’re great additions to any flat, make you feel a little less like a grown up, and hunting for the rare designs is quite fun. This Acid bear was the first of my collection and he’s still my favorite. Check out kidrobot.com and artoyz.com, both have a great selection!

3. HEADPHONES (V-MODA, CHECK HERE): I find myself working more and more in headphones these days so a comfortable pair to travel with is vital. These V-Moda headphones are the first wireless headphones I’ve owned and I’m hooked! It’s really great to not be tangled in cables when you’re on the move and they’re really comfortable so you can wear them for long periods of time when needed. (http://v-moda.com/crossfade-wireless/) They’re also customizable, I have a Crosstown Rebels pair the label gave us which I’m always proud to pull out of my bag.

4. PERFUME (LE LABO, CHECK HERE): When you spend a lot of times at smoky clubs it’s vital to have a little travel scent to always keep you fresh! No one wants to be that person that smells like last night’s party on a crowded airplane. My friend works at Le Labo and made me this personalized scent. It says Alinka and Chicago on the bottle so I’m a bit obsessed with it. They have a lot of great products I highly recommend.

FILE 46 // AMBIVALENT

Hands Ambivalent 5elect5

1. SKULL (NO BRAND)This little skull is a squishy toy that I’ve had since my first studio in Chinatown in NYC 10 years ago. When you squeeze him, a big bubble filled with rubber roaches pops out of his eye. It’s a great stress reliever.

2. SYNTHESIZER / SEQUENCER (ROLAND TB-303): My dear 303, you are so many things in one – creative oracle, enlightenment portal, bass weapon and future heirloom. Our relationship is fraught with heated exchanges, power struggles and deep enchanting affection. In the words of Anita Baker – you bring me joy.

3. AMPLIFIER (SMOKEY AMPS, CHECK HERE )This is a tiny guitar amplifier housed in a cigarette pack. I can plug an instrument into it, and it even has an output cable so I can record through it. Sometimes I pick it up to play guitar when I need a break, sometimes I plug a synth into it and record the noise. Sometimes all three items on this page work together as a team.

FILE 35 // FRITZ HELDER

Hands Fritz Helder 5elect5

1. VAPORIZER (eGO ONE, CHECK HERE ): I have to stop smoking cigarettes … But I love them too much! I carry this vape pen around everywhere knowing that one day soon I’ll ditch the sticks.

2. WIG ( NO BRAND ): A wig is like a hat with an attitude. I like to wear this pink “bobbed” one backwards (Elvira Hancock vibes). I can cast a mean glamour when I wear this wig on stage …but after a long night out Im always struggling cause it ends up looking all twisted and nappy hanging off my head ( rock n roll ).

3. ADULT TOY (TENGA EGG, CHECK HERE ): Someone thought I needed this for some reason. I’m  told it was like a flesh jack or something like that. I haven’t tried it yet but I keep it in my carry on bag. I’ll def bust it out when I’m back touring, lonely & horny.
