FILE 102 // SPENCER PARKER

2018 was another busy year for London-born producer and DJ Spencer Parker. He is ending this year on a high note with the release of his second album “Dance Music” on Work Them Records. Founded back in 2012, the label has become the one stop shop for high energy house, techno and disco tracks – all you need in your record bag for a fueled dance floor. Supporting new talents such as P.Leone & Valya Kan as well as friends like DJ Deep, Rødhäd, ItaloJohnson and long-time partner in all crimes Radio Slave – whose label Rekids he very much considers home away from home – shows his wide network and talent for bringing people together to collaborate. For the photoshoot, we met Parker at his apartment in Berlin. Whenever we meet an artist at his / her home, we come to realize that a selection of essentials is merely a snapshot of the creative individual and not enough to paint the full picture. Parker’s home was filled with colors and fun rare items – mostly “best worst” souvenirs from every city he visits (which is …

RBMA // IARAHEI

Chilean musician, producer and DJ Iara Espinoza Dos Santos AKA IARAHEI is a bundle of energy and talent. Aside from the selection of essentials below, her studies in tarot and astrology are the other source of inspiration for her music. The musical influences by artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Daft Punk and M.I.A shape the sound of IARAHEI. Listen to her latest work as a member of the synth-pop band Sri Lanka 100. MY ESSENTIALS 1. COMPUTER (APPLE, CHECK HERE): My computer is EVERYTHING for what I do. It the tool that gets me making new music, listening and discovering music, and express my feelings and desires. It also knows when i’m sad and cheers me up. It’s a wonderful partner that comes in almost every musical activity that i do, but sometimes I try to make sure it gets some rest… I love you, sweetie! 2. LITTLE POCKET ESSENTIALS (A COLLECTION): For this journey in the academy, I tried to used this little bag somebody gave me to carry around some tiny essencials: My stones for energetic help/healing, my usb sticks for some little …

FILE 97 // ANASTASIA KRISTENSEN

Born in Russia and now based in Copenhagen, Anastasia Kristensen is one of the strongest names that represent Denmark’s electronic music scene today. Her artistic career started early in classical music which can be still found in her wide musical spectrum of DJ sets. Building her local profile in the Danish capital blossomed recently into a residency at the legendary dance music club Culture Box and bookings at Fabric, Berlin Atonal, Unsound Festival, and Boiler Room at Present Perfect Festival this year. Despite the impressive touring schedule around the world, Kristensen keeps a full-time job as an IT consultant which she really enjoys and values. She says that her day job which has nothing to do with music keeps her sane and allows her to focus even more on music because her time is limited. Kistensens’s DJ sets span a wide spectrum of genres and styles. She takes pride in finding unique gems and unreleased music which has made her also one of Denmark’s musical tastemakers. It’s no surprise that her talent is widely supported in the community which results in strong …

FILE 90 // PAN DAIJING

Pan Daijing. It’s not only the artist’s name but also stands for a singular art form because there is no genre or label that can sum up her work. Pan’s live performances take place at galleries, museums, theaters and underground venues – the space becomes a part of the experience for her and the audience to connect. Her album Lack 惊蛰 on Berlin-based label PAN is merely a teaser into her world of extremes creating an appetite for more. Pan’s work can be violent, dissonant and dark but with delicate elements, moments of relief and silence. The high contrast of her work, however, feel almost meditative and allow the artist and the audience to become more intimate. It’s a smart technique Pan has full control over because she directs and builds her shows to every detail ranging from lighting, costumes and visuals. Born and raised in China, Pan moved to Berlin 2 years ago after receiving a sound design degree in San Francisco and starting her musical career back in China’s art and performance scene. We were able to catch her in between international tours and a trip back …

FILE 82 // BARBARA KLEIN

Barbara Klein is a Berlin-based Polish musician, videographer and photographer. She established her career and reputation working with Techno legend Richie Hawtin and captured his his global tours in the form of tour diaries, event recaps and conceptual films. Other work includes collaboration with Soundwalk Collective (who we also covered on 5elect5), Yamaha , Spotify and now Native Instruments, one of the industry leading companies in music technology. For the early morning photoshoot, we met Barbara at her cozy apartment in the heart of Kreuzberg. Unlike her body of work that tends to speak a dark and mysterious language, she was warm and kind, offering us a cup of coffee and slices of fresh watermelon. Her essentials are a selection of items that give insight into her background, family as well as herself – revealing a strong connection to her passion turned into a profession . When she asked whether cigarettes or colourful cute socks with animals were better for the shoot, we obviously went for the socks. She then pulled out her large collection of socks for us to choose …

FILE 77 // ALINKA

Chicago native Alinka started off her career playing alongside Justin Long at the city’s infamous Smartbar. Picking her battles wisely, releasing on Crosstown Rebels and Classic Records, she then teamed up with DJ and vocalist Shaun J Wright (previously part of Hercules & Love Affair) to start Twirl, a monthly party in Chicago. Their focus always stayed on the music and artists that inspire them, so it was inevitable that they expanded the Twirl empire with its own imprint: Twirl Recordings, a platform to support and manifest the music she loves. Living and working between Chicago, Berlin and New York, Shaun and Alinka just finished their latest collaborative EP “Time for Action” which was picked up by Heidi on her Jackathon Jams imprint last month. We met Alinka at her new flat / studio in Berlin and go a warm welcome by her flatmate – a black cat named “Acid”. The reason why Alinka had chosen a flat with a garden, which is a rare find on the Berlin housing market, was that “Acid” could go …

FILE 46 // AMBIVALENT

1. SKULL (NO BRAND): This little skull is a squishy toy that I’ve had since my first studio in Chinatown in NYC 10 years ago. When you squeeze him, a big bubble filled with rubber roaches pops out of his eye. It’s a great stress reliever. 2. SYNTHESIZER / SEQUENCER (ROLAND TB-303): My dear 303, you are so many things in one – creative oracle, enlightenment portal, bass weapon and future heirloom. Our relationship is fraught with heated exchanges, power struggles and deep enchanting affection. In the words of Anita Baker – you bring me joy. 3. AMPLIFIER (SMOKEY AMPS, CHECK HERE ): This is a tiny guitar amplifier housed in a cigarette pack. I can plug an instrument into it, and it even has an output cable so I can record through it. Sometimes I pick it up to play guitar when I need a break, sometimes I plug a synth into it and record the noise. Sometimes all three items on this page work together as a team.
