FILE 90 // PAN DAIJING

Hands Pandaijing 5elect5 EssentialsPan Daijing. It’s not only the artist’s name but also stands for a singular art form because there is no genre or label that can sum up her work. Pan’s live performances take place at galleries, museums, theaters and underground venues – the space becomes a part of the experience for her and the audience to connect. Her album Lack 惊蛰 on Berlin-based label PAN is merely a teaser into her world of extremes creating an appetite for more. Pan’s work can be violent, dissonant and dark but with delicate elements, moments of relief and silence. The high contrast of her work, however, feel almost meditative and allow the artist and the audience to become more intimate. It’s a smart technique Pan has full control over because she directs and builds her shows to every detail ranging from lighting, costumes and visuals.

Born and raised in China, Pan moved to Berlin 2 years ago after receiving a sound design degree in San Francisco and starting her musical career back in China’s art and performance scene. We were able to catch her in between international tours and a trip back home to China. Dressed in black leather from head to toe, she shared with us that wearing leather gives her comfort and has become the outfit of choice on stage. Spending time with her family and eating home-cooked meals are equally essential to her creative process as the selection of items shown below. Although her work is so international, avant-garde and borderless – her roots and inspiration are in China and will always stay in China.

Essentials Pan Daijing 5elect5

1. CALENDAR (FIND IN CHINA): Chinese year calendar with photos of ancient antiques. Good remind of the day.

2. CANDY (FIND IN CHINA): Sugar free throat candy made with classic throat healing recipe in china.

3. OIL (WING LONG, FIND IN CHINA): Red flower oil helps with muscle pain and wounds. Must have for frequent travellers and heavy sports life. Intense smell also refresh the brain.

4. VIBRATOR (FIND YOUR OWN): Vibrates away all the stress. Quick pleasure.

5. SYNTHESIZER (ATOMO SYNTH, CHECK HERE): Favorite piece of gear of all time.

FILE 89 // PYUR

Hands Pyur 5elect5 EssentialsPyur aka Sophie Schnell is fast and fearless. Reaching out to Scuba to offer her vocals to landing a job at his label Hotflush Records and this year getting signed to the Hotflush artist roster. Her debut LP Epoch Sinus seems to be only the opening chapter to the world of Pyur. The album’s sound is so diverse and beautifully crafted that it deserves its own genre. Sophie’s sound design is deep and mystical, drawing inspiration from classical music, nature and anything she “sees” while making music. Her creative process and work is both visual and sonic and this experience is shared with her audience by releasing a video piece for each track on the album.

We met Sophie at her studio / apartment in Berlin. The moment we stepped into her space, it was like entering another cosmic dimension and we understood immediately where her music was coming from. Her studio was filled with “Pyur” material such as crystals, ocean inspired decorations, candles, beautiful textiles and mysterious art work. On the contrary, Sophie also told us that she produces a lot of music for commercials and films because she enjoys the challenge to be creative within a limited time frame. Her essentials are the items that channel Pyur’s creative energy to be fast and fearless at her studio and on the road.

Essentials Pyur 5elect5

1. HARD DRIVE (INTENSO, BUY HERE): My musical and visual projects tend to get so large that I have to outsource most of my data, to be able to keep on working without crashing my poor laptop. On this hard drive is EVERYTHING. So I take good care of it.

2. CRYSTALS (PERSONAL COLLECTION): These are a selection of stones I carry around, the Pyramid one I use a lot for artworks, the others I like because of how they feel. I think of stones as inverted rooms, that I can enter. I learn from their process of becoming what they are.

3. MIDI KEYBOARD (M-AUDIO, CHECK HERE): This is my little travelling midi-keyboard. It’s good enough! And there used to be more stones on it. They are real Swarovskis, my stepfather used to work there a while ago. The rest of the stones must still stick around somewhere in suitcases, flats and other countries..

4. ALPHA DISC (GIFT): I use this Alpha-Disk (developed by Lissy Götz) to change my mind every now and then. There are many sentences and affirmations for re-programming the „highways“ of the brain arranged in a circle and I close my eyes and point to one and read it and feel it inside and then I often feel quite different afterwards. It’s good when I feel stuck.

4. BOOK (THE ROYAL TOMBS OF EGYPT, BUY HERE): I have a habit of travelling with heavy books, most recently books about ancient Egypt. I can easily get lost in the mystical and beautiful artworks and beliefs from that time. It’s quite inspiring for me. It’s forms and signs seem more futuristic than from a long time ago. The sarcophagi remind me of star gates. The knowledge of  ancient Egypt is somehow on an intuitive level a big part of my music.

FILE 84 // PEREL

Hands Perel 5elect5 EssentialsBerlin-based producer, DJ and singer Annegret Fiedler aka Perel has made some smart decisions in her career. From the selection of labels she chose to work with to the impressive list of exclusive mixes and artist collaborations, she has slowly paved the way to make her dream come true: an album release on the famous label DFA Records — the “dance floor institution” founded by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. The success story did not happen overnight. Musical breakthroughs are like lotteries and patience as well as endurance is required to eventually hit the jackpot, or not. Speaking to Annegret, we noticed how much she cared about her supporting fans and the strong network behind the brand Perel. She brings the perfect balance of fun and professionalism and her essentials show the same. The carefully curated collection of items are iconic yet practical and necessary for her to keep the show going.

Essentials Perel 5elect5

1. PERFUME (CHANEL, CHECK HERE): Real disco sweat needs a proper answer.

2. GLASSES (VINTAGE, NO BRAND): This lady is about about 30 years handmade in Italy.

3. CONCEALER (BENEFIT, CHECK HERE): Dark eye circles are essential part of my  business.

4. HARD DRIVE (TOSHIBA, BUY HERE): It’s my brain actually. All my music is on that disk.

5. DELAY (TC-HELICON, BUY HERE): No live vocals without this baby.

FILE 81 // SANDUNES

Hands Sandunes 5elect5 EssentialsMumbai-native Sanaya Ardeshir aka Sandunes is a music activist. As a producer, composer and musician known for her diverse blend of electronica which combines eclectic sensibilities with progressive electronic elements, she recently released a digital album on Bandcamp and a track for Red Bull 20 Before 17. As a certified Ableton trainer, she advocates accessibility and exposure around music-making by giving workshops and lectures about music production and performance. As a founding member of DASTA – an Indian artist collective, Sanaya challenges the thinking behind music making norms by hosting community platforms to connect music makers and artists. Last but not least, as a resident of the Border Movement, an initiative by the Goethe Institute, she is spending this summer in Berlin to help bridge and raise awareness for South Asian music. What keeps her going? The answer lies probably in the selection of her essentials: a perfect balance of creativity, energy and health.

Essentials Sandunes 5elect5

1. DARK CHOCOLATE (VIVANI, BUY HERE): Perhaps very dark chocolate is an acquired taste, so let’s just say I’ve acquired it. It’s a bit of a ritual for me, one I need to engage with at least everyday, and I think it helps me feel like I’m at home even when I’m in a foreign country or in a hotel for a gig or a project. It’s usually the first thing I’d buy when I’m in a new place too. Over the years I’ve been moving up the scale of …darkness and 92% is my new sweet-spot.

2. BAG OF NUTS (LOCAL MARKETS): I do this always – it’s my hangry-hack and also makes me feel secure over long flights and airport pitstops because I’m sort of always hungry. Honestly though – you’re as likely to find me out and about without my phone or wallet as you are without a bag of nuts. I try and find a local supermarket that let’s you pick-n-mix your own. Good spots have been Regal Plus in Bombay (Bandra) -my local. Holland & barrets in London, Whole Foods in New York and in Berlin, the local Turkish supermarkets have been the best.

3. FIELD RECORDER (ZOOM, BUY HERE): I’m not making music anymore that doesn’t include field recordings, and this is my tool. I worked on a project last year called ‘Searching for Sound’ and spent about 6 days with a field recorder plugged into my ears all over Bombay. What I came away with was the thought that you really never know when the opportunity to collect awesome sounds is going to spring itself upon you – so these days I’m always sort of prepared.
The H5n is an amazing size, and has a great function of recording a double backup file at a lower gain level so *in case* anything’s distorting in real time, your field recorder’s really got your back.

4. YOGA MAT (MANDUKA, BUY HERE): Yoga goes everywhere I go, and so does this mat. It’s a really special mat – the only one I know of that folds up like a towel – super convenient to pack in my suitcase and take all over the world, especially when you need to travel light because .. synthesisers.

Essentials Daedelus 5elect5

1. PETIT COMPENDIUM (NO BRAND): I spend creative days in computer screens, but know full well that’s not where the music happens. So on occasion when I need electrical grounding out comes my Petite. I’ll punch physical holes into a card and let it loose; it’s a truth teller.

2. DESKTOP COMPASS (VINTAGE): To my off-hand right is this memento mori. I like to keep it in my peripheral no matter where in the studio. It serves no musical purpose, and never changes it’s dogged question for North. I adore that, and would follow it to the ends of the Earth if it ever asked.

3. DELAYDELUS (DAEDLUS AND BLEEPLAB, BUY HERE): An invention of Bleeplab and myself. A sampler/delay instrument that is equal parts serious noise and silly pitched airhorns. I’ve been putting out albums for the past 15 years – all too often flat things that require very little interaction, you need only press play and they’ll do the rest, but the Delaydelus begs to be played with. It is my greatest invention thus far.

4. TANUKI AND KAPPA WOODEN FRIENDS (VISIT JAPAN): Some serious vintage on their patina, I don’t recall how these two came into my life, but now they’ve been through it all. I feel better composing for an audience then just offering up ditties into the void and these two’s ears have been there for all my albums including this Labyrinths. Totem or juju or in the most classical sense.

FILE 52 // MACHINEDRUM

Hands Machinedrum 5elect5

Essentials Machinedrum 5elect5

1. INCENSE (PALO SANTO – NO BRAND): I bring Palo Santo with me everywhere.  When I’m traveling I have to deal with a lot of other peoples vibes, particularly negative or stressed out ones.  When I get to my hotel room I typically light some palo santo.  Not only does it “clear the air” and calm me down but it also gives me a familiar feeling as I also light palo santo at home in the mornings and before bed.  It connects me with home and a sense of peace wherever I’m at.

2. HOUR GLASS (NO BRAND): I bought this hour glass at an antique store in Nashville Tennessee.  I have it in my studio on my workstation desk.  I tend to use it when I have a difficult production task that I need to accomplish but know that I can’t spend too much time on.  I like it better than setting a digital timer because it gives me something visual to represent time.  A ticking clock gives me slight anxiety and bad memories from school.  The hour glass has a calming nature to it.  Once the hour has passed I know to take a break and walk away from whatever I’m doing so that I don’t make any hasty decisions.

3. EQUIPMENT (MIDI FIGHTER, SEE HERE): The MIDI Fighter is an essential piece of gear for me.  I love the action of the arcade style buttons on it when programming drums or just jamming out live.  I use it in the studio and on stage.  It’s fun to pick up and dance around playing it during my shows.  It’s good eye candy for the crowd with all its flashing lights.  It’s also very sturdy and has survived many gigs which I can’t say about a lot of other MIDI controllers I’ve owned.
