FILE 96 // KASPER BJØRKE

Hands Kasper Bjorke 5elect5 Essentials

One of Denmark’s most famous musical exports is, of course, Kasper Bjørke. Known for his disco-inspired releases and DJ sets, “Kasper Bjørke” has become brand for good club and dance music. When he is not touring around the globe, he is either working on new music or humbly writing soundtracks for brands like Nike Jordan, Prada and various other art and fashion magazines. Listening to these and his latest albums on hfn music , it becomes apparent that the Kasper Bjørke sound reaches new territory outside the club music raum. He is now gearing up for the new album release which will be out on the legendary record label Kompakt this October. Besides being a full-time artist on stage and in the studio, he is also working as a passionate music manager behind the scenes – which started around 10 years ago from the pure wish to help and support his friends with their career.

Constantly exploring and pushing his artistic boundaries with collaborations with other creatives, Kasper is a full-time professional who knows what works for him as the brand – balancing both being an artist and a manager – and as an art director giving us suggestions on how to layout his essentials. Thank you, Kasper! It was a pleasure working together 🙂

Essentials Kasper Bjorke 5elect5

1. GUM (STIMOROL, CHECK HERE): I chew this particular gum when taking off and landing, because I always have issues with my ears.. and because Im really, really afraid of flying, it also helps me relax somehow.

2. GLASSES (NO BRAND): I originally bought these as sunglasses but then had prescription lenses in them because Im pretty blind. I just got some gold sunglasses clip-ons for them, which is amazing. I somehow feel like a 70 year old man when I wear them though.

3. VITAMINES (NO BRAND): All my vitamines, herbal medicine and herbal sleep aids in a metal container that looks like a giant pill. I take so many different supplements that I would probably need to check in a piece of luggage to bring all the original packages if I didn’t have this one!

4. NECKLACE (WHEN SAINTS GO MACHINE, CHECK HERE): I got this necklace from my neighbour who is in the band When Saints Go Machine. They had it made as a piece of merch some years ago. Love and Respect is a beautiful message and I bring it on travels and wear it for gigs as a lucky charm…

5. EARPLUGS (ELACIN, CHECK HERE): Im a extremely light sleeper so besides my natural sleep aids I take every night, I also need to wear these custom made ear plugs that are made to seal off sound completely. I cant sleep without them anymore. They help alot on the road as well, before the hotel housekeeping would also wake me up at 8 AM when vacuuming the other rooms or opening/closing doors, which is no good when you are out DJing until 5 or 6 AM.

6. CAP (NORTH FACE, CHECK HERE): I never used to wear a cap because I had long hair and thought I looked silly with it. But now, with quite short hair, I feel naked without it.

7. DEODORANT (AESOP, CHECK HERE): I really like the scent of this deodorant. I dont need to wear it but for gigs I do it just to be on the safe side. Nobody likes a stinky DJ.

8. HEADPHONES (BOSE, CHECK HERE): Another remedy to calm my neves whenever Im on an airplane are these Bose noise cancellation headphones. I always listen to ambient music during take off and landing.

9. TOTE BAG (ABLETON LOOP, CHECK HERE): My manbag. I always have a random tote bag with me for all my stuff, this particular one I got from a dear friend…

FILE 86 // NOAH SLEE

Hands Noah Slee 5elect5 EssentialsFor New Zealand born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Noah Slee had a busy year and it will get even busier in 2018. Releasing the debut album “Otherland” on Majestic Casual Records and playing at major festivals around the world was a big step in his career. Based in Berlin 6 months out of the year, Noah has found two place he can call “home”. The life between two countries seem to reflect his character and music well: genre-bending, respectful and open. His take on soul and RnB is fresh but accessible and so is his approach to writing the lyrics which are about the depth of communication, love and honesty.

When photographing his essentials, it seemed to be an easy task for Noah to gather the items because they were simply his favorite things. Especially the collection of Converse sneakers was quite impressive. He owned the same model in multiple colors, various editions, and several worn states. Even the hummus he brought out of the fridge came in several flavors because he loved them all.

Essentials Noah Slee 5elect5

1. JOURNAL (NO BRAND): Always keep me accountable in its own weird way, which is weird cos its just a journal but I guess the therapy and outlet it gives me its more than a just a journal. Mainly concepts, ideas, poems and of course lyrics. I’m too lazy to do the everyday dear diary thing
.

2. HUMMUS (CHECK YOUR LOCAL STORE): Is my new favourite food since moving to Berlin. In NZ I didn’t really try hummus but some of my besties in the city have treated me to traditional Arabic food in their homes and I seriously almost have it with everything now its ridiculous. haha

3. SNEAKERS (CONVERSE, CHECK HERE): Past few years I’ve mainly been rocking chucks, proud member of the ‘Taylor Gang’ and it goes easily with all my clothes.

4. MASCHINE (NATIVE INSTRUMENTS, BUY HERE): I use this baby live all the time and it’s never let me down.

FILE 84 // PEREL

Hands Perel 5elect5 EssentialsBerlin-based producer, DJ and singer Annegret Fiedler aka Perel has made some smart decisions in her career. From the selection of labels she chose to work with to the impressive list of exclusive mixes and artist collaborations, she has slowly paved the way to make her dream come true: an album release on the famous label DFA Records — the “dance floor institution” founded by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. The success story did not happen overnight. Musical breakthroughs are like lotteries and patience as well as endurance is required to eventually hit the jackpot, or not. Speaking to Annegret, we noticed how much she cared about her supporting fans and the strong network behind the brand Perel. She brings the perfect balance of fun and professionalism and her essentials show the same. The carefully curated collection of items are iconic yet practical and necessary for her to keep the show going.

Essentials Perel 5elect5

FILE 77 // ALINKA

Hands Alinka 5elect5 Chicago native Alinka started off her career playing alongside Justin Long at the city’s infamous Smartbar. Picking her battles wisely, releasing on Crosstown Rebels and Classic Records, she then teamed up with DJ and vocalist Shaun J Wright (previously part of Hercules & Love Affair) to start Twirl, a monthly party in Chicago. Their focus always stayed on the music and artists that inspire them, so it was inevitable that they expanded the Twirl empire with its own imprint: Twirl Recordings, a platform to support and manifest the music she loves. Living and working between Chicago, Berlin and New York, Shaun and Alinka just finished their latest collaborative EP “Time for Action” which was picked up by Heidi on her Jackathon Jams imprint last month.

We met Alinka at her new flat / studio in Berlin and go a warm welcome by her flatmate – a black cat named “Acid”. The reason why Alinka had chosen a flat with a garden, which is a rare find on the Berlin housing market, was that “Acid” could go outside and play. She also shared the story of cat “Acid” breaking her favorite toy bear by the artist “Acid” with the biggest smile and laugh. As it turns out, Alinka is not only a music lover but also a big cat lover – especially “Acid”. Each of Alinka’s essentials came with a unique story, a collection describing her past, present and future desires. The high quality of Twirl’s merchandising is proof of her professionalism and passion behind the project.

Essentials Alinka 5elect5

1. JACKET (TWIRL ORIGINAL, CREATE YOUR OWN HERE): I got this custom-made varsity coat as a parting gift for myself before leaving Chicago and it’s still the only one in existence. It’s by far my favorite clothing item I own, and luckily Berlin is cold enough for me to wear this a lot of the year.

2. TOYS (BEAR QUEE, CHECK HERE): I’ve been collecting designer toys for years! They’re great additions to any flat, make you feel a little less like a grown up, and hunting for the rare designs is quite fun. This Acid bear was the first of my collection and he’s still my favorite. Check out kidrobot.com and artoyz.com, both have a great selection!

3. HEADPHONES (V-MODA, CHECK HERE): I find myself working more and more in headphones these days so a comfortable pair to travel with is vital. These V-Moda headphones are the first wireless headphones I’ve owned and I’m hooked! It’s really great to not be tangled in cables when you’re on the move and they’re really comfortable so you can wear them for long periods of time when needed. (http://v-moda.com/crossfade-wireless/) They’re also customizable, I have a Crosstown Rebels pair the label gave us which I’m always proud to pull out of my bag.

4. PERFUME (LE LABO, CHECK HERE): When you spend a lot of times at smoky clubs it’s vital to have a little travel scent to always keep you fresh! No one wants to be that person that smells like last night’s party on a crowded airplane. My friend works at Le Labo and made me this personalized scent. It says Alinka and Chicago on the bottle so I’m a bit obsessed with it. They have a lot of great products I highly recommend.

FILE 72 // HEATHERED PEARLS

Hands Heathered Pearls 5elect5

Heathered Pearls is Jakub Alexander, a highly talented but humble multitasker. Working as a producer, DJ, label co-founder, A&R and curator, one might wonder how many full-time jobs a single human can handle. Jakub found a way to do them all very successfully. He is now on tour with his old friend Tycho , who recently got nominated for a Grammy. Obviously, Jakub was involved with this project as well as the A&R at the Ghostly International, a label known for its quality, individuality and forward-thinking involvement in music and art. We visited his new home in Berlin and were impressed how the space resembled his personality and sound: tastefully curated with attention to every detail. As he is based in New York, Detroit and Berlin, his belongings seem to be stripped down to only the things he really cares about: his dog Theo, records, music gear, sneakers and the essentials he chose for this shoot. We like to believe that we found an important key to successful work life balance through a peek into Jakub’s life.

Essentials Heathered Pearls 5elect5

1. PERFUME (MAISON LOUIS MARIE, BUY HERE): There’s a vibrancy to this scent that calms me down. The motion of rubbing your wrists together with this specific musk eases any rush i’m in.

2. SHIRTS (CARHARTT, BUY HERE):  I love long sleeves in the winter, I have about 40 Carhartt shirts in total, even one from high school that’s still too big. Now they’re en vogue and they make softer ones. When they go out of style I’ll still be wearing mine.

3. RING (GHOSTLY, CHECK HERE): The ghostly ring, there’s a handful of them out there among the artists and co-workers. It’ll be my 15th year at Ghostly this year, I got this pretty guy 7 years in from Sam, I always DJ with it, he helps me pick the next track.

FILE 71 // TZUSING

Hands Tzusing 5elect5

Taipei-based Malaysian DJ and producer Tzusing’s upcoming LP is already his forth on the acclaimed Brooklyn label L.I.E.S and in our opinion the most powerful in sound and message. The album title 東方不敗 translates to “Invincible East” and is based on a character in a novel by the Chinese author Jin Yong. However, unlike the emotional and dark narrative, Tzusing in person is quite an honest and witty character with a healthy perspective on life. We met him at his brother’s home during his Europe tour and had a chat about his childhood, his mentor and his efforts to influence the growing electronic music scene in Taiwan. We felt his selection of essentials describes him well: straight to the point – practical and effortlessly cool.

Essentials Tzusing 5elect5

1. NECK GAITER (4 DIMENSION, CHECK HERE): I’m a tropical human. Not designed to be traveling to these cold ass places.  Modern weather protection addressing these problems.

2. UNDERWEAR (UNIQLO, CHECK HERE): Ain’t nobody dope as me; I’m dressed so fresh, so clean.

3. SLEEPING PILLS (ANY KIND): I have a pretty hard time sleeping as it is, really compounded when there is the stress of shows and traveling.

FILE 68 // DOT

Hands Dot 5elect5

Los Angeles-based producer, label owner and Team Supreme member: DOT. She has been actively shaping the West Coast music scene by giving workshops and supporting forward-thinking female producers and artists on her Unspeakable Records imprint. Her new creative entrepreneurs project THE SOURCE  just launched in December.

Essentials Dot 5elect5

1. BOOK (HARUKI MURAKAMI, CHECK HERE): I am a HUGE literary nerd, and can’t go anywhere without a good book (or 5). Reading is my favorite way to kill time during inevitable travel delays, and a book will never run out of battery power.

2. PUSH (ABLETON, BUY HERE): The Push is one of the most powerful and versatile controllers I’ve ever had the pleasure of laying hands on, and so easy to take with me anywhere I go. Push + MacBook + headphones = the ultimate portable studio.

3. BACKPACK (HERSCHEL, CHECK HERE): Having a solid backpack is so essential on the road, and this Herschel pack is my absolute favorite. It’s like one of those magic bags that can hold way more than you’d expect without looking or feeling cumbersome. Plus, this one is water-resistant and has a handy laptop sleeve built in! Beautiful marriage of form and function.
